Back to Basics - Renewing Your Practice

Hello all! It's been a minute! Life has been steering me in all sorts of directions and unfortunately has left me with less time to write and keep the blog moving right along.

In addition to life steering me away from my writing, I have also been struggling over the last couple of months (okay, year) keeping yoga in my weekly practice.  Since I started running consistently over the past year I've really neglected my yoga practice which has left me feeling a little lost when it comes to exercise.  Running is my cardio and I do cross train at the gym, but with all this stress I should really be focused on bringing the yin back into my schedule.

Last night I walked from my house to Riverfront Promenade to practice a little.  I'm still slowly recovering from a small injury in my knee so I was mindful to my body when doing poses I hadn't done since I went to the muscle therapist.

After talking to my friends at run club about my knee pain, many of them recommended that I go and talk to Dr. Pileggi, who is a local doctor specializing muscle manipulative therapy. I wasn't really sure what a muscle manipulative therapist did but since I had already seen an orthopedic about the issues I had been having I figured it was worth a shot.

Turns out that my sartorius muscle had worked it's way out of place. Although I'm not sure how long it had been in the incorrect position, the doctor was able to examine my leg muscles and immediately know what was wrong.  Moving the muscle back to it's correct alignment was very painful but it was for the best!

It's been a little over a month since I saw the doctor and 2 weeks over the recommended healing period and I'm starting to feel some relief. Even though I am still experiencing some pain while exercising the doctor has assured me that it's all a part of the healing process. The muscles in my leg are re-learning how to work with each other in the correct position so there has been some cramping and discomfort along the way.

I did purchase a foam roller the other week from Marshalls and it has been a helpful tool in working through the random kinks and tightness I've been experiencing since visiting the doctor.  I'm planning on scheduling a follow up in the future just to make sure that I am still on track!

In the coming weeks, I'm going to New Hampshire for Memorial Day weekend to see a good friend get married and spend time with family.  In June I am taking off to London for a week which will be my 1st out of the country trip since I went to Iceland in 2016. I haven't taken a week off for myself in a while so I'm very eager to get away even just for a little!

When I get back I hope to fill you all in on my travels and more on life, fitness and art!
